What to Expect with a cake smash session
Cake smash sessions are simply a smash!
You’ve spent a year keeping a tiny human alive, time to celebrate. Yes, baby won’t remember their first birthday, but you will and you deserve fabulous pictures to remember this time. Don’t know what to expect with a cake smash session? This post is for you.
Scheduling – If you are wanting the pictures back and any prints and products back from me before the actual birthday of the child then you will want to have the session take place 1 to 2 months before. If that isn’t a priority you can have the session take place closer to the actual birthday. In either case you’ll want to book the session 2 to 3 months before you want the session to take place.
Now, I know life gets busy and time escapes us so if you find you only have a few weeks then go ahead and call and see if there is availability. No harm in asking, and maybe you’ll get lucky.
Planning – Together we will plan your baby’s first birthday photo shoot. We will talk outfits, colors, theme, and if you want to add on the cake smash and splash tub. Depending on the session you choose there will be one to two simple and timeless backdrop sets, and a customer designed theme backdrop. I will also work with you on scheduling the session during the time of day where baby is rested and fed.
Session Day – When you and your child arrive I will spend several minutes talking to you and letting baby warm up to me a little. Please have ready some songs or actions that baby likes that will help me feel comfortable and help him/her smile and laugh. When I start taking pictures I will be moving fast and I go with the flow of the baby and what he/she will let me do. I will need your help putting baby in position and repositioning baby when needed when they start to crawl or walk away.

After the Mess – It’s totally ok, mess happens! I have towels and water to help clean baby up when they are done cake smashing and water splashing. At the end of the session I will go over what happens next after the session.
